Biking in the Andes

Exploring the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Cusco by bike is a one-of-a-kind experience. Each day of our journey, we’ll ascend the majestic Andes, riding along winding roads that connect picturesque traditional villages, ancient agricultural terraces, and archaeological sites. Mile by mile, you’ll discover the rich Inca and colonial history that merges with the vibrant Andean culture of today.

Over the course of six days, we’ll be accompanied by local guides with professional cycling experience, a support vehicle, mechanical assistance, and hydration stations. At the end of each day’s ride, we’ll enjoy charming hotels with traditional style, where we can taste the best of Peruvian cuisine. In the evenings, for those eager to explore further, we’ll organize tours to local attractions.

Day 1 :

WELCOME TO THE SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS!!

Our cycling adventure begins. We will transfer from Cusco airport to the Sacred Valley of the Incas to start our GFNY 2023 experience.

The Valley is characterized by a temperate climate and a lower altitude than Cusco, ideal to get used to the Peruvian Andes.

We will have a welcome at the Terra Viva hotel and mechanical assistance for the assembly and tuning of the bicycles.

Day 2 :

YUCAY – PISAC – YUCAY

We will make our first acclimatization trip, riding through the Sacred Valley of the Incas on a semi-flat route trying to accumulate kilometers of low intensity.

We will leave Yucay following the valley until we reach the Inca town of Pisac, this segment is mostly "flat". Then we will make a short climb to the View Point of the Archaeological Center of Pisac. Before a brief stop in a traditional Coffee and Empanada Shop, we will return to Yucay.

Day 3 :

YUCAY – HUAROCONDO - OLLANTAYTAMBO

We will begin our first sustained climb as we leave the hotel towards Yucay. After 10 miles, we will start an 11.5 km ascent through the Rapchi River gorge, leading us to the traditional town of Huarocondo. From there, we’ll take the segment from Huarocondo to Pachar and then to Ollantaytambo—a fun and fast descent that brings us to one of the most beautiful Inca towns.

Day 4 :

ABRA MALAGA PASS

One of the most beautiful and challenging peaks to reach in the Peruvian highlands. We will depart from the town of Ollantaytambo towards Abra Málaga, located at 4330 meters above sea level, at the foothills of the Veronica snow-capped mountain. This ascent is characterized by variations in its climatic conditions, as we will start from a warm valley and summit a peak with icy winds and low temperatures.

Day 5 :

PISAC - HUACARPAY LAGOON - PISAC

We lower the intensity, riding along a semi-flat route overflowing with beautiful natural landscapes. We will start in Pisac and follow the course of the Vilcanota River. After 5 miles, we’ll make a short climb to the Huanca Sanctuary. Then we’ll continue towards the Huacarpay Lagoon and finish at the Rumiqolqa Archaeological Center, where we will have a special experience.

Day 6 :

OROPESA– PAUCARTAMBO

We will start from Pacor town on a lesser-known but extraordinarily beautiful and challenging route that will take us to Paucartambo, one of the most picturesque and traditional Colonial towns in Cusco. The first 7 miles will be flat, ideal for warming up, and then we will face the ascent towards the Abra de Minamarca, a stretch of 18 miles with a climb of 3120 feets. Once we reach the summit, we will descend rapidly to the town of Paucartambo.

Day 7 :

CUSCO CLIMB VIA PISAC

We will start in the town of Pisac with a 5-mile semi-flat route to warm up. Then, we will face the ascent to Cusco, which includes a sustained climb with an average gradient of 4% and ramps reaching up to 6%. Upon reaching the summit at Abra de Yuncaypata, we will enjoy fantastic views of the city of Cusco. Afterward, we will descend through the Inca archaeological site of Sacsayhuamán and reach our final destination, the beautiful Colonial Plaza of Cusco, for an epic arrival.
